Miscellaneous papers consisting of letters concerning Semmes' command; personal correspondence; a letter, 1872, to James R. Osgood & Co. concerning a series of articles in the Atlantic monthly on whether Semmes should be tried in connection with the sinking of the C.S.S Alabama, and his desire that his own article be published; clippings relating to Semmes; and a volume containing accounts and a diary. The diary, February-May, 1865, describes Semmes' appointment as rear admiral; his duties as commander of the James River Squadron; the weather; illness; desertions; exchange of prisoners; his orders to destroy his eight ships; the withdrawal of his guns to Danville, Va., and the defense of the town by his naval brigade of artillery; their march to Greensboro, N.C., and plundering along the way; Confederate generals at the Greensboro headquarters; surrender of the Confederacy; and the march home to Alabama.

Built in Philadelphia as the Habana, the CSS Sumter was originally used as a blockade runner in New Orleans. In 1861, she was purchased for use by the Confederate Government. Under the command of Raphael Semmes, she captured a number of Union flag merchant ships off the coasts of Cuba and South America, as well as other locations in the western hemisphere.
